Wi-Fi & Charging

Connectivity inside O'Hare International Airport is treated as essential infrastructure rather than a premium amenity. ORD provides free Wi-Fi throughout every passenger terminal, with no time limit, no captive-portal account requirement beyond a single tap-to-accept page, and bandwidth provisioned to support video calling for the bulk of users on the network. Most U.S. airport authorities funded major Wi-Fi capacity upgrades during the post-pandemic recovery, and the typical experience at ORD now compares favorably to a coffee shop or coworking space.

Connecting to airport Wi-Fi is straightforward at ORD. Select the airport's SSID (typically named something like ORD-Free-WiFi or Boingo Free WiFi at airports where Boingo manages the network), tap through the splash page, and you are online. Premium tiers with higher bandwidth and longer session times are sometimes available through Boingo subscriptions or through specific credit cards (the AT&T Wi-Fi service bundle, for example), but the free tier is sufficient for video calling and large file uploads on most networks. Cellular coverage from all major U.S. carriers is generally strong throughout the terminals, including the underground people-movers and inter-terminal trains, so 5G fallback is reliable when Wi-Fi gets congested during peak operating hours.

Power outlets and USB charging are now standard at gate seating areas at ORD, with the density of chargers varying by concourse. Newer concourses and renovated gate areas typically include both standard 110V outlets and USB-A/USB-C ports built into the seating; older concourses can feel crowded around the few seats with wall outlets, especially during the morning and late-afternoon banks. Charging towers and standalone charging tables — operated by ChargeBox, BrightBox, and similar vendors — supplement gate-area outlets at most ORD concourses. Carry a portable battery pack if you are traveling on a long international itinerary; a 10,000–20,000 mAh pack is comfortably under the 100 Wh TSA limit for carry-on lithium batteries.

Workspace and quiet zones have expanded substantially. Most ORD concourses now include at least a few quiet rooms or low-stimulation seating areas away from the gate-area announcement speakers; some include dedicated workspace booths (Jabbrrbox, Minute Suites work pods, and similar) bookable by the hour. Conference rooms inside airline lounges remain the most reliable option for video calls during a layover. Power-and-data kiosks for printing boarding passes, scanning documents, and accessing emergency cash are available landside near baggage claim and ticketing.
